From Remote Roads to Open Seas: Heavy Industry Logistics Ltd Moves Static Rig from Tanzania to the UK 💪

In May and June, the Heavy Industry Logistics Ltd team successfully completed the movement of a static drilling rig from an off-grid site in Tanzania to the United Kingdom.

While not the largest rig they’ve handled, this move presented its own set of logistical challenges, each met with planning, adaptability and precision.

✍ Strategic Routing via Mombasa

Mombasa Port was selected as the port of loading due to ongoing berthing delays in Dar es Salaam. The decision added complexity, requiring a cross-border transit and staging operation in Mombasa, but ultimately ensured greater reliability for the vessel schedule.

To avoid storage costs and vessel detention, tight coordination was required at every point, from road movement to staging to final port delivery.

🤔 Tough Terrain, No Problem

The rig originated 260km from the nearest known town, on roads that were more mud track than motorway, conditions made worse by persistent rainfall in the days leading up to mobilisation. They anticipated this.

Working with a civils contractor already operating in the area, they carried out emergency repairs and towing on some of the worst sections. Once back on tarmac, the convoy continued another 1,665km towards the coast.

🚚 Precision Staging in Mombasa

Upon arrival, the rig components were labelled, prioritised, and prepared for a 24/7 port delivery schedule. Over the course of nearly 60 hours, they managed round-the-clock shunting to the Mombasa quayside, aligning with the vessel’s arrival window.

Loading was executed without issue. The vessel is now en route and expected to arrive at its destination before mid-August.

💼 On-the-Ground Partnership

The Heavy Industry Logistics Ltd Team executed this move alongside their partners in Tanzania, Trident Logistics EA, who delivered on-site support, including:

✅ Provision of cranes and telehandlers
✅On-ground truck coordination
✅Load securing and lashing oversight
✅Export clearance and customs formalities

Another complex move delivered with clarity and control, from bush tracks to British docks.

Congratulations to the Heavy Industry Logistics Ltd Team for this successful project !
